Approaching Iona Abbey
Nick and Mark have been walking to raise money for the major restoration project which is shortly to begin at St Mary’s, Aberfoyle.
Writing about their journey, Nick says:
‘By the time we reached the finishing line last Friday evening we both felt fair knackered, so we saved the photo shoot until the following morning! A combination of monsoon conditions over the first three days and unavoidably long stretches of road walking made for hard going at times, but all our B&B hosts were very helpful along the way and in between the rain we were rewarded with views of stunning scenery, especially along the south coast of Mull.
‘Perhaps more than anything, we appreciated the almost tangible spiritual quality of Iona Abbey itself and the inspiration of its rebuilding and development as an ecumenical Christian centre, nowadays visited by over 140,000 people a year. Pilgrims have been going there for a very long time, and it’s not hard to see why.’
In the spring, Nick and Mark will be setting off on the second leg of their pilgrimage - this time to Whithorn. If you would like to support their effort, visit their online fundraising website.
